 Career Ready – West Lothian

Career Ready is a charity whose aim is to support secondary school pupils into employment by connecting schools with local employers to open up the world of work to young people. In 2017 Maxi Construction began to support Career Ready with a commitment to mentoring and a paid internship. In 2022/23, our Contracts Manager, Brian Ward, was matched with a local secondary school student with an interest in the construction industry and they completed a 4 week placement with us throughout the summer.

For 2023/24, Construction Director Barry Simpson has committed to mentoring; three meetings have already taken place with a 4 week placement scheduled for Summer 24.

West Lothian College – Business Admin Support

We provided work placements for Business Admin students from West Lothian College throughout the Spring. The students shadowed Compliance Manager, Lisa Aitken and said the following about their placements:

“I completed my final day of work placement with Maxi Construction Limited in Livingston and it was an incredible experience the entire way through.

Prior to this experience I had very little understanding of how the construction industry operated and associated said industry more with trades such as joinery, plumbing, roofing etc. than with any administration roles. However, over my 5 days at Maxi I was introduced to the many departments which operate at the company and act as the backbone of the construction industry. This also allowed me to improve my current skillset in a new environment which will undoubtedly help me in my current and future studies.

This experience has helped to enlighten me about the opportunities available in the industry and helped to further my own thoughts regarding my future employment options.

I would just like to thank everyone at Maxi who were not only extremely welcoming but also willing to answer any and all questions which I had during my time there. Special thanks to Lisa Aitken who organised, scheduled and mentored me through the whole process and was incredible the entire way through. I wish them all the best in the future and once again thank them for the incredible experience.”  Peter Currie

“I got the chance to spend my work placement at Maxi Construction Limited in Livingston where I got the opportunity to learn about how their organisation operates and all the great things they do for the community and the environment.

I truly believe that this experience will help me with my current studies as a HND Business student at West Lothian College and in the future as well when it comes to choosing the right career path for me.

I gained some new skills due to my amazing mentor Lisa Aitken who had made sure that I try myself out in different areas of the business in order to make the most out of this work placement.

Thank you, Lisa, for being my mentor and organising this for me, your hard work is highly appreciated.” Julia Moor
