Summary: Internal refurbishment and reconfiguration of primary school
Description of Works: Internal upgrade and the creation of disabled access to a traditional primary school building including reconfiguration of the building layout.
Downtakings and strip-out including asbestos removal
Roof repairs to slate and felt roofs
Window sill replacement
Internal doors and doorsets
Mechanical and electrical works including major alterations to water services including upgrading of pumps and installation of a new Calorifier, new main electrical distribution board and re-wiring, platform and stair lift installation, replacement heating, ventilation, power and lighting, fire and security systems and data installations.
Flooring including carpet, vinyl and specialist vinyl sports floor in the games hall
Suspended and plasterboard ceilings
Plasterwork and painterwork
Fit-out works including fitted furniture, work surfaces with sinks and toilet facilities
External works included the construction of an access ramp to the main entrance and new stairs and paths to existing exits.
An additional asbestos survey identified further asbestos to be removed at week 2 and delayed works by approximately 3 weeks. Through reprogramming and sequencing of subsequent activities the delay was restricted to a period of 2 weeks.
As works commenced on site, some parents raised concerns over asbestos removal and vehicle movements. A joint meeting was held with the Client, Maxi and parent representatives which clarified that the works were being completed in the agreed manner with all necessary control measures in place.
Following a safety talk to school pupils a poster design competition was held with the top 3 designs selected via votes from Maxi Construction employees. The prize winners were presented with certificates, gift vouchers and enlarged reprints of their posters.
Sub-contractors were included in training courses and events.
