Description of Works:

This project, part of the Primary School & Early Years Bundle for Clackmannanshire Council delivered with hub East Central Scotland Limited, was for the design and construction of a new 554m2 timber-frame extension to an existing, operational nursery. The building provides playzones,  kitchen, stores, toilets, office spaces and changing areas.

Works included:

  • Groundworks
  • Utilities connections
  • Concrete floor slab
  • Timber frame construction
  • Rainscreen cladding and render to external walls
  • Insulated steel-clad built-up roof system
  • Timber alu-clad windows and doors and fixed rooflights
  • Curtain walling
  • Internal partition walls
  • Glazed timber screens
  • Suspended ceilings and acoustic panelling
  • Mechanical and electrical installations including power, lighting, data, access control, alarm systems, air source heat pump, pv roof panels, windcatchers, underfloor heating and ventilation
  • Internal finishes were of biophilic design for occupant connectivity to the natural environment.  This featured in the FF+E colour palettes and natural oak vinyl flooring

Added Value:

  • We installed an Air Source Heat Pump which is sized to accommodate future expansion (either upgrading the older existing building or new build replacement).
  • The ASHP required sound attenuation which was achieved by installing an acoustic barrier to prevent noise nuisance (we carried out an acoustic assessment to determine exactly what measures were required).
  • We installed Photovoltaic panels on the roof with an internal display panel in the play space.
  • We installed windcatcher ventilation passive stacks in the in the open plan areas
  • Internally there are large sections of exposed roof construction in the play areas allowing the children to see how the roof is constructed.

Community Benefits:

  • Repainted the façade of the existing building
  • Supplied and installed blinds in the flexible area of the existing building
  • Provided acoustic panels in the quiet room of the extension
